شقالة

الشّقالة إناء من الحجم المتوسط والكبير لتقديم الطعام الجماعي وقد تعني قدر للطبخ في بعض المناطق.

يذكرها Dozy في ملحقه للمعاجم العربية ويرسمها "أشكالة" معرفا إياها:

 "sorte de vase ou coupe, L(atin) (ampulla, caucum)"

البحث عن أصل كلمة شقالة يؤدي بنا إلى احتمالين اثنين: أصل لاتيني وأصل جرماني.

أصل لاتيني؟

قد يكون أصل شقالة الكلمة اللاتينية scutella وهي تصغير لكلمة scutra بمعنى صحن أو طبق صغير. 

كلمة scutella أفرزت العديد من الكلمات في شتى اللغات الأوروبية كلها بمعاني متقاربة، فهي أصل

أصل جرماني؟

هل أتتنا كلمة شقالة مع الوندال؟ قد تنحدر كلمة شقالة من الكلمة الجرمانية scāla بمعنى محارة وطبق الميزان و "صحفة" (Fr. bol; Eng. bowl) وهي الكلمة التي أفرزت schale في الألمانية المعاصرة (ومن معانيها الصحن و "الصحفة")  و scale في الأنكليزية أولا بمعنى كوب ثم طبق الميزان ثم الميزان نفسه
